The castle of Sant'Ellero is just 18 km from Florence, immersed in a park of ancient trees and enjoys a vantage point over the Arno valley and its gentle embrace of vineyard-covered hills. It was built in the Early Middle Ages to defend the convent of Benedictine nuns at Sant'Ilario in Alfiano, whose estate included almost the entire mountain of Vallombrosa. Villani's chronicles narrate, that in 1267 the Florentine Guelfs, supported by the militia of Charles of Anjou, King of France, conquered the castle that had become the refuge of the best Ghibelline knights, who had been driven out of Florence. The central tower, the lower levels, used as crypts and prisons, and sections of the castle fortifications survive; of the monastery it is still possible to see the church, transformed in 1700, the cells, the ancient cloister and the arcades. The salons, terraces and gardens in the park date back to the sixteenth-seventeenth century.
